Services

Maternity (Obstetrics)

Both clinicians and midwives provide maternity care at St George's Healthcare's Maternity Department. Services include an early pregnancy assessment clinic, antenatal and post-natal clinics, and a day assessment unit for pregnancy problems. The delivery suite delivers almost 5,000 babies a year. There is a specialist regional service for complicated pregnancies. There are specialist clinics for women with medical problems, such as diabetes, and there is also a Download free PDF reading software [opens in a new window] teenage pregnancy clinic.

For many local mothers and babies, the care they receive will be midwife-led. The midwifery team provides ante-natal services in the community and at the hospital, and most women can choose where they give birth; home, delivery suite or birth centre. The hospital has 13 delivery rooms and 40 postnatal beds, including eight single rooms. In addition to midwives, obstetric staff and auxiliaries, the department is supported by a dedicated team of anaesthetists who provide 24 hour cover for obstetric emergencies, and epidurals for pain relief where appropriate.

The Carmen Suite midwifery-led birth centre supports a natural and active approach to birth and has two birthing pools.

Maternity unit values

We aim to:

  • Provide a clean, calm, and safe environment
  • Treat others with kindness
  • Uphold privacy and dignity at all times
  • Respect patients’ choices, cultures and beliefs
  • Provide consistent, well informed, and personalised care
  • Always maintain a supportive atmosphere

Midwifery practice at St George's Healthcare is supported by a dedicated team of supervisors of midwives who ensure that the highest standards of care are maintained for mothers and babies through evidence based practice.

St George's Healthcare is a tertiary referral centre, which means it provides specialist care not available at other hospitals, to women with complicated pregnancies. We take high risk obstetric cases from across the UK and have the regional neonatal intensive care unit.

Facilities include a bereavement suite for women who have lost a baby, which allows them be cared for away from the post-natal ward.

Making a pregnancy self-referral to St George's Healthcare

Restrictions on pregnancy referrals

Currently we are not accepting referrals from Croydon, South-East or North London areas. Exceptions may be made for women with high-risk pregnancies or health-related issues: in such cases, referrals are reviewed regardless of your geographic location. If you have recently moved into the Wandsworth area or surrounding Merton area but are booked at another hospital, you can make a self-referral to the maternity unit using the form below.

How do you make a self-referral?

There are a different ways of making a referral for pregnancy to St George's Healthcare. The main method is through going to the general practitioner (GP) who will write to the hospital or send in a referral. This method may take up to 1 week but usually 48 hours. Self referral is simple and direct; you will need to complete all the sections of the Download free Word Document viewing software [opens in a new window] pregnancy self referral form and either take the completed form to the Antenatal Booking Office on the 1st floor of Lanesborough Wing at St George's Healthcare or fax the form to the Antenatal Booking office (number printed on the form). Once you bring in your completed form in to the Antenatal Booking Office the staff will arrange your appointment and direct you to the Fetal Medicine Unit.

Early contact with a midwife is essential for all women who confirm their pregnancy as this will ensure that screening tests are done by 12 weeks and provide useful health and life style information.
