The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is were over 600 critically ill children come every year. There is probably no more difficult event for parents and families than having their child admitted in PICU, so we have a dedicated team of around 40 nurses, 20 doctors and many other staff all focussed on delivering the best possible care for the sickest children in our region.

About two thirds of our patients come in through the Paediatric Emergency Department. The remaining children are referred from our region or because of the department’s special expertise. In addition to hosting the largest children’s surgical unit in London, a large infectious disease unit, a trauma centre, neurology service and paediatric neurosurgery unit as well as a host of other paediatric tertiary services, we also have the largest PICU Oncology practise in the UK.

The key to excellence in PICU is the expertise, dedication and quality of its staff. We are proud not only of our outcomes for the children we are privileged to care for (see the national PICU data collection service for details) but also the way in which our children and their families have experienced our care.
