There are also excellent links with paediatric neurology, clinical genetics, orthopaedics, respiratory paediatrics, audiology, ENT and child & adolescent psychiatry including the learning disability team.

The Neurodevelopmental Paediatric Service is the largest sub speciality service within the NDND care group with approximately 1000 new referrals into the service in a year. Children are seen for developmental assessments at secondary Paediatric clinics at St George’s Hospital site and in community outreach clinics. All consultants have admitting rights and access to facilities for investigation at St George’s Hospital. Wandsworth has developed special schools and units/resource bases for learning and physical disability, emotional and behavioural problems, visual and hearing impairment and autism.

Close by is the Early Years Centre (EYC), a joint Health and Local Authority service catering for children with special needs up to 8 years of age. Co-located in the EYC are Mind, who provides a wide range of support services and the Wandsworth Autism Advisory Service (WAAS).

The EYC currently provides a range of assessment and outreach services It has a particular role in relation to children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and other communication disorders who make up the majority of the children assessed in the form of a multidisciplinary assessment with a team of highly specialist Speech and Language Therapists. The ASD service has undergone a lot of transformation since 2020 and has improved the assessment experience and impact on waiting times. The ASD service is in line with the NICE guidelines.

The specialist ADHD service manages about 900 children assessing around 150 new patients per year. The service is supported by two ADHD nurse specialists. A multi-disciplinary meeting is held weekly.

The Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) service for children with special educational needs has very good relationships with the Education and Social Services. The department contributes medical assessments for more than 300 children per year undergoing assessment for Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), we collaborate with the therapists’ team and communicate with other Paediatric specialties and CAMHS to ensure that a bespoke comprehensive medical/health plan is assembled for each child to help the children achieve their potential in learning.

The Complex Neurodisability service cares for children with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, neuromuscular disorders, progressive neurological conditions and neurodevelopmental problems requiring investigation. A multi-professional assessment (MPA) service is provided by the five core CDC disciplines (paediatrics, physiotherapy, speech & language therapy, occupational therapy and psychology). Joint neurology, joint orthopaedic and joint respiratory clinics are held at regular intervals. The service is supported by a neurodisability nurse specialist. The service accepts referrals for children who have a home address in Wandsworth and/or GP in Wandsworth only.

The second tier paediatric epilepsy service at St George’s Hospital (assessing over 100 new patients per year), is provided by 2 consultants from the Neurodisability/Epilepsy specialist team. There are well established epilepsy, neurodisability transition clinics and joint neurology clinics. The service is supported by an Epilepsy Nurse Specialist.
