Guardian of Safe Working reports

Updates from the Guardian of Safe Working, Prof Kirsty LeDoare:

The year 2024/2025 has seen a lot of changes in the working conditions of junior doctors with an increase in winter pressures compounded by rota gaps.

The result has been a flexible workforce supported by senior colleagues but who have had to compromise on many training opportunities despite the accommodation of speciality colleges and examination boards. We have been working hard to address these and encourage all resident doctors to exception report if they miss training opportunities, experience increased working pressures because of unfilled rota gaps or are staying late because of workload. We are here to support you, but to do so, the Guardian of Safe Working needs to know what the issues are so that these can be addressed.

Wellbeing support has been provided with the help of a wellbeing fellow, who has identified several areas to improve the working environment. We have now spent these funds on improving working areas and providing furniture for breaks in many medical and surgical specialties.

No fines were issued this year.

In the next year, emphasis will be on recruiting doctors to represent their specialties in the Junior Doctors Forum, looking into support for the Medcard division where most of the exception reports arose.
