The St George’s neuroradiology service performs advanced imaging techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions, including stroke and cerebral aneurysms.
Procedures performed include:
- CT and MRI scanning
- Diagnostic and interventional neuro-angiography
- Neurovascular ultrasound
- X-ray and theatre work
The neuroradiology service supports the St George’s Hospital stroke unit by providing acute advanced imaging (CT and MRI scanning) with instant reporting, allowing the rapid thrombolysis which is vital to improving the outcomes for stroke patients.
The majority of services are provided in Atkinson Morley Wing at St George’s Hospital, which houses the modern state-of-the-art scanning equipment and theatres. All services are provided by specialist multidisciplinary teams.
Treatments
The neuroradiology service provides both diagnostic and therapeutic services.
Diagnostic procedures are performed using CT and MRI scanning, X-ray, neurovascular ultrasound and diagnostic neuro-angiography.
Most procedures will be MRI and CT scans. X-rays and neurovascular ultrasounds are alternative imaging procedure that are commonly used for children and patients who are unable to stay still for a long period of time.
Neuro-angiography is a procedure to diagnose vascular abnormalities in the spine, head and neck.
Our interventional neuroradiologists treat conditions endovascularly, such as cerebral aneurysms, arterio-venous malformations and fistulae.
Key staff
Neuroradiology services are provided by a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including consultant neuroradiologists, anaesthetists, specialist nurses and therapists.
Referrals
Referrals for neuroradiology are made by other healthcare professionals and GPs. Healthcare professionals should read the guidance on making urgent and non-urgent referrals.

Neurovascular MDT referrals
The Neurovascular MDT meeting takes place at 12:30pm every Tuesday in the Atkinson Morley Wing, St George’s Hospital. It is attended by neuro-surgeons, neurologists, neuro-radiologists, stroke physicians and neurovascular clinical nurse specialists.

Neurovascular MDT External referral form
Please send all relevant imaging via the IEP and the referral form by the Friday preceding (or in the case of bank holidays the Thursday) the meeting. The images and information need to be reviewed by a Consultant Neuroradiologist before the Neurovascular MDT. It may not be possible to provide management and advice if a referral form and imaging are unavailable at the time of the meeting.
