On this page:

Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a common condition that can result in a broad range of symptoms including problems with movement, cognition, and speech. People often experience other symptoms alongside FND, including persistent pain and fatigue.  As a physiotherapy service, we see people whose main problems is with their movement. Common FND movement symptoms include:

  • Weakness
  • Tremor
  • Walking difficulties
  • Dystonia (altered movement patterns and postures)
  • Facial movement disorders
  • Jerks and spasms

The physiotherapist will ask about your history, assess your symptoms, and discuss your therapy goals.  Treatment is collaborative, and may include:

  • Education
  • Movement analysis
  • Movement retraining
  • Self-management planning
  • Advice on other treatment options that may be appropriate

Our service is also involved in FND teaching and research with St. George’s University of London and in collaboration with other research groups.  If you are interested in taking part in these projects, please ask your physiotherapist.
