Referrals
The following section provides information for referrers on how to refer to the hand therapy team and information for patients on how to follow up a referral.
Internal Referrals
The hand therapy team accepts internal referrals from the Plastics, Orthopaedics and Rheumatology departments at St Georges Hospital.
The paediatric hand therapy service is an internal service, and as such accepts referrals from within plastics clinics only. Hand Therapy support is provided to both the Paediatric Hand Trauma Clinic and the Paediatric Congenital hand clinics. The team is unable to accept paediatric referrals from GP’s or other clinical specialties within St Georges Hospital.
External Referrals (referrals from other hospitals/clinics)
Information for Patients
If your care is transferred to us from another hospital, we will attempt to contact you as soon as possible to arrange an appointment. You will either be booked to a consultant clinic appointment or a hand therapy appointment depending on your on-going rehabilitation needs.
Information for Therapists
We are able to accept referrals for patients from other hospitals, provided that the patient has a GP in the St George’s Hospital catchment area.
Please provide a transfer of care summary including operation notes (if applicable), clinical history and any hand therapy input provided to date. This can be emailed directly to the team:
If the patient does not have a registered GP or is out of area, the care of the patient will need to be transferred to one of our consultant clinics in the Hand Unit. This can be done by contacting the Hand Unit directly on 0208 725 4770.
GP referrals
If you have been referred to hand therapy through your GP you can contact the Central Booking Service (CBS) to follow up on your referral.
Once your referral has been registered with the team, an appointment will be organised for you. You will be sent a letter to confirm the appointment, and will also receive text reminders at seven days and two days prior to your appointment.
Please note that the team does not accept walk-in’s or self referrals to the service.
