Hand Therapy
On this page:
Welcome to the Hand Therapy team at St Georges Hospital.
Hand therapy is the art and science of evaluating and treating injuries and conditions of the upper limb . We use a number of therapeutic interventions to help return a person to their highest level of function.
The hand therapy team at St Georges Hospital is made up of specialist Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists who have been trained to work with a variety of hand conditions and injuries.
We encourage our patients to carry out their own treatment programmes as independently as possible and to be responsible for their rehabilitation. Our aim is to enhance patients’ recovery and assist with an optimal return to function.

Key staff
Our team is led by a Clinical Specialist Hand Therapist, supported by three Highly Specialised Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists and a further six full time hand therapists. We also have a specialist therapy assistant who supports patients with their rehabilitation.
The hand therapy team provides support to both paediatric and adult clinics across the trust, and we work closely alongside our consultant plastic and orthopaedic surgeons in the Hand Unit & the paediatric Dragon Centre.
We also receive referrals from the Rheumatology and Orthopaedics Departments, and take referrals from GP’s within the catchment area for St Georges Hospital.
Members of the team are actively involved in research, teaching and masters’ level study, and team members regularly present at both national and international conferences.
“The human hand is one of the most precise and wonderful mechanical devices in creation and vastly more impressive than any mechanical device that man has ever made”.
