Below are some commonly prescribed hand therapy exercises. Please access the information that is applicable to you.

Your therapist will review your progress and adjust your therapy programme accordingly over the weeks and months following injury or surgery. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Hand Therapy department on 0208 725 1038.

Oedema (swelling) management in Hand Therapy

The following information leaflets will provide you with treatment options to manage swelling that may occur after your hand injury.

Oedema management

Contrast bathing

This technique involves immersing your hand in a bath of warm water and then cold water. This encourages the blood vessel to open and close, therefore acting as a pump to move the fluid out of your hand.

Coban wrap

Coban is an elasticated bandage that sticks to itself and can be wrapped around a finger in such a way that can help to gently push swelling out of an affected area.

Retrograde massage

It is a specific massage technique that can help disperse swelling and encourage blood flow in the hand.

Compression gloves

These are garments that can provide a gentle compression to help push excess fluid out of the hand. The gloves come in different sizes, please speak to your therapist to ensure you get the correct fit.

Scar management

It is important after an injury or surgery to ensure the scar maintains flexibility and avoids becoming too thick. Below are strategies we use to help manage scars post injury/operatively.

Scar massage

Scar massage is a way of softening and flattening scars. Your therapist will advise you when it is appropriate to begin massage, as it is not appropriate to massage a scar that is still open or if there are any signs of infection. This information leaflet provides you further information on how to undertake scar massage.

Silicone for scars

It is proven that silicone based products can help the scar formation and ease the symptoms. Usually it is used in conjunction with other treatment modalities in the management of your scar.

Reducing sensitivity of your scar

After injury scars can become overly sensitive and normal touch/pressure can start to feel quite unpleasant or even painful. This leaflet provides information on strategies to reduce the oversensitivity in a scar.

What to do if you are concerned about your scar:

–        In the early stages post operatively/injury, you must keep your wound clean and dry until it has healed.

–        After your operation or injury you should look out for signs of infection. These include: redness, swelling, increased pain, discharge (fluid leaking through the dressing) and raised temperature to the area.
