About the service

The Pelvic Team at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust consists of four Consultants and a Clinical Nurse Specialist supported by a Pelvic Fellow and experienced health care staff working within a specialist department consisting of a dedicated theatre suite, two Trauma and Orthopaedic Wards and an outpatient department. Patients managed predominantly include those with traumatic fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum and those with pathologies affecting the pelvis and acetabulum such as metastatic disease, infection and musculoskeletal trauma with no bony injury. St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves as the designated Major Trauma Centre for the Trusts affiliated to it by means of the South West London and Surrey Trauma Network, but also provides an established tertiary referral service, accepting referrals from across London, the South East of England and also further afield.

For all matters, the Pelvic Team can be contacted during normal working hours (Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays, between the hours of 07:30 and 15:30) via the Clinical Nurse Specialist (0208 672 1255, Bleep 7064). Outside of these hours, and when the Clinical Nurse Specialist is on leave, Bleep 7064 will be redirected to the on-call Orthopaedic Registrar.

The Pelvic Team holds an MDT twice a month at 08:45. This MDT serves as an opportunity to discuss and establish management plans for new referrals, to review check imaging for postoperative patients and any patients who are on a conservative management pathway and to review the progress and management of patients with active input from the Pelvic Team. The MDT also provides a platform for the Consultants to bring and discuss cases and acts as an access point to the Pelvic Team for advice. Of course, all new referrals will, initially, be escalated to one of the Pelvic Consultants outside of the MDT for review.

A database of all pelvic and acetabular patients referred to the Pelvic Team is maintained by the Clinical Nurse Specialist. This database serves as a record of all referrals, treatment plans, recommended follow up, on-going issues and new issues pertaining to existing patients and any relevant notes and comments.
