Service Description
Nutrition is fundamental to life; this becomes all the more important when people are admitted to hospital. During illness or injury our nutritional requirements can change significantly.
The role of the Paediatric Dietitian is to provide adequate and appropriate nutrition for infants, children and young people, taking into account the diverse needs of the paediatric population in terms of age, developmental stage, family dynamics, ethnicity and religious beliefs.
The acute Paediatric Dietitian takes into account the specific needs of the unwell paediatric inpatient using Evidence Based Practice, to provide Nutritional Support (which serves to support nutritional status through their medical treatment) as well as Nutritional Treatment where the diet is used to treat and manage a particular disorder, either as the major or the sole treatment.
Children who are better nourished have better outcomes and lower morbidity during times of acute illness. We work closely, in conjunction with our medical colleagues, to support and educate patients and their families to achieve good health and improved quality of life.
Our team of dietitians also work closely with catering services to ensure that the meals provided meet the specific life stage nutritional, cultural and religious needs.
