When to seek urgent medical attention after your endoscopy

Although complications following an endoscopic procedure are uncommon, it is important to know what symptoms to look out for and when to seek medical help.

The symptoms to look out for, and how long you need to look out for them, depend on the procedure you have had.

This may be for the first 24 hours, one week or up to two weeks following your procedure.

Please read the discharge information for your specific procedure using the links below. This explains the symptoms you should look out for and how long they may be relevant following your procedure.

If you develop any of the warning symptoms listed in your procedure-specific discharge information

Follow the advice provided in your discharge leaflet. If you are advised to seek urgent medical attention, go to your nearest Emergency Department or call 999 in an emergency.

Do not drive yourself to hospital. Take your endoscopy report with you if possible and tell the healthcare team what endoscopic procedure you have recently had.

Please let us know

If you attend an Emergency Department following your procedure, including at another hospital, please inform the St George’s Endoscopy Unit during working hours.
