Endoscopy services at St George’s Hospital

The Endoscopy Unit at St George’s Hospital delivers diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract. As part of a major NHS teaching hospital, the service combines advanced endoscopic technology with the expertise of consultants, clinical endoscopists, specialist nurses and support staff.

Endoscopy services are provided across three sites in south west London:

  • St George’s Hospital, Tooting – six endoscopy rooms
  • Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton – two endoscopy rooms
  • The Nelson Health Centre, Morden – two endoscopy rooms

This multi-site model helps us provide accessible care for patients across the region.

South West London Bowel Cancer Screening Centre

The South West London Bowel Cancer Screening Centre is based within the St George’s Hospital unit. It provides screening colonoscopy for people who have received a positive bowel cancer screening test.

The centre supports the early detection and prevention of bowel cancer, helping to improve outcomes for local people.

A national centre for endoscopy training

St George’s Hospital is a University Hospital and one of the UK’s National Endoscopy Training Centres and is a member of the London Endoscopy Training Academy (LETA).

We play an important role in training the next generation of highly skilled endoscopists, helping to maintain the highest standards of patient care now and in the future.

All doctors and nurses undertaking endoscopy training are fully qualified healthcare professionals who are developing their endoscopic skills.

As part of your care, a trainee endoscopist may be involved in your procedure under the direct supervision of an experienced and accredited endoscopy trainer. Patient safety, comfort and quality of care remain our highest priorities at all times.

Many patients value the opportunity to contribute to the education of healthcare professionals. However, participation in training is entirely your choice. If you would prefer a trainee not to be involved in your care or procedure, please let a member of the endoscopy team know when you are admitted, and your wishes will be respected.

Live Endoscopy Training Courses

As a National Endoscopy Training Centre, St George’s occasionally delivers specialist educational courses for healthcare professionals. Some courses involve the live closed-circuit transmission of procedures from the endoscopy room to a secure, closed educational audience of healthcare professionals.

If your procedure may be suitable for inclusion in one of these courses, you will be contacted separately and provided with full information. Your explicit consent will always be sought in advance, and your decision will not affect the care you receive in any way.

Our commitment to patients

Our diverse, multidisciplinary team is dedicated to providing safe, effective and compassionate care. We serve people across south west London and accept referrals from beyond the region, helping patients access high-quality endoscopy services when they need them.
