St George’s is the specialist haemoglobinopathy team for patients with sickle cell and thalassaemia in the SW London area and parts of Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. We support the local haemoglobinopathy teams at Epsom and St Helier’s Hospital, Frimley Park Hospital, Royal Surrey County Hospital, East Surrey Hospital, Ashford and St Peters Hospital and Kingston Hospital.

Patients living in our region will be seen at St George’s at least once a year for their annual review and will have access to our specialist nursing and psychology services. We provide transfusion therapy at St George’s and support local hospitals with other treatments such as hydroxycarbamide, iron chelation and consideration of new therapies.

There is a haematology registrar and consultant on call 24/7 available via the hospital switchboard for urgent advice

All patients at St George’s will have a universal care plan that is available on the London Care Record or that patients can access via their NHS App.

Please do contact the sickle cell and thalassaemia team at St George’s for any inpatients at your local hospital you are worried about. Please discuss urgently for advice and consideration of transfer any patient with sepsis, neurological symptoms, hypoxia, possible transfusion, emergency surgery or any concern. Advice can be sought 24 hours / day.

If patients are being considered for surgery at your local hospital, please do discuss with the team at St George’s for planning and agreeing the best site for the procedure to happen.
