Dr Sarah Howie

Professional profile: 

Dr Sarah Howie trained at the University of Wales College of Medicine and subsequently trained as a consultant physician and geriatrician in South London. During her registrar training she undertook an MSc in Gerontology at King’s College London, carrying out and publishing research on the role of geriatricians in peri-operative care. Much of her consultant working has been in orthogeriatrics, providing medical care for older patients who have sustained trauma requiring orthopaedic surgery. Her interest in falls has led to her being part of the National Audit of Inpatient Falls advisory group at the Royal College of Physicians which has enabled her to combine her interest in falls and trauma with quality improvement at the ward level.  

Whilst at St George’s, she has set up a POPS (peri-operative care for the older person undergoing surgery) service with the vascular surgical department. This service provides inpatient medical care for vascular patients and a pre-operative clinic which offers holistic assessments that help the surgical teams assess suitability for vascular operations and identify areas for optimisation before surgery. This work has now expanded to include patients under the complex arthroplasty team, providing medical care for those patients requiring a multi-specialty approach to their care.
