Hospital issues Wimbledon warning ahead of Championship
As hundreds of thousands of tennis fans head to Wimbledon for the iconic tournament from Monday, the Chief Nurse at nearby St George’s Hospital in Tooting has warned that it may increase demand for emergency services and is urging people to stay safe in the sun.
While London will be over the worst of the heatwave, temperatures are still expected to be high, so people are being urged to take care – whether they are lucky enough to have tickets or are cheering on from a beer garden.
Studies show that hospital attendances can drop before and during big sporting events while people delay seeking treatment, only to spike once the event is over.
Last year’s tournament saw a record-breaking attendance, with more than half a million people attending the two-week long event.
Chief Nurse Nicola Shopland said: “Wimbledon brings people together and we’re so lucky to have it on our doorstep – we want people to enjoy it but also be safe by taking simple actions such as staying hydrated, keeping cool and wearing sunscreen.
“If you do need our help, we are here for you – don’t delay getting treatment and use NHS 111 for non-urgent help or 998 for life-threatening emergencies.”
People can keep themselves and others safe by:

· Using sunscreen SPF 30 or higher and reapplying regularly
· Drinking plenty of fluids regularly – don’t wait until you feel thirsty
· Choosing water or diluted drinks and avoiding too much alcohol or caffeine
· Looking out for others around you, especially those who may be more vulnerable
