The kindness, professionalism and quality of care at St George’s have been praised by patients but tackling noisy wards and our discharge processes could improve, says the CQC

The results of the latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) Adult Inpatient Survey show a strong performance across a number of key areas, with patients particularly positive about the way they were treated by our colleagues during their hospital stay.

Respect and dignity received the Trust’s highest score of 9.2 out of 10, while kindness and compassion scored 9.1 out of 10, – the same as last year, reflecting the consistency of our care and reflecting the professionalism of our teams.

Patients also expressed high levels of confidence in their clinical care, with doctors scoring 9.0 out of 10 and nurses scoring 8.5 out of 10. Care and treatment was also rated highly at 8.5 out of 10, demonstrating patients’ positive experiences of the care they received.

However, the survey also identified areas where there is an opportunity to improve the patient experience, including reducing noise on wards, strengthening discharge planning and improving our virtual wards.

Feedback suggested that some patients would welcome greater involvement in discharge decisions, particularly around medicines, ongoing care and support available after leaving hospital. Patients also identified opportunities for earlier discussions about whether equipment or adaptations may be needed once they return home.

The survey also highlighted opportunities to further improve how St George’s meets patients’ individual needs, including cultural, language and accessibility requirements.

Overall, patients rated their experience at St George’s 8.3 out of 10 – just above the national average – highlighting the high-quality care and support provided by dedicated teams across the Trust.

Nicola Shopland, Site Chief Nursing Officer, said: “It is encouraging to see patients rate us so highly for the kindness, compassion and professionalism of our colleagues, as well as the quality of care they received from our clinical teams. These results reflect the dedication and commitment of staff across the Trust to delivering safe, high-quality, person-centred care.

“We are already taking steps to improve the areas highlighted in the survey. To support better rest and recovery, we now provide eye masks and ear plugs for patients, and we have introduced a 24-hour discharge lounge, giving patients a comfortable place to wait while transport or collection arrangements are made.

“While we are pleased that patients felt well cared for during their stay, we recognise that there is always more we can do. Patient feedback is invaluable in helping us understand what matters most to those who use our services, and we will continue to listen, learn and make improvements to ensure every patient has the best possible experience.”

Across all 12 areas measured by the survey, St George’s was rated as performing “about the same” as other NHS trusts, with no category falling below the national comparison threshold.

The survey gathered feedback from more than 400 patients who stayed at least one night in hospital during November 2025. You can read the full results here.
