Emergency scenarios

The flowcharts adapted from the National Tracheostomy Safety Project: www.tracheostomy.org.uk, describe pathways for the management of patients with a tracheostomy and patent upper airway or tracheostomy/laryngectomy with no patent upper airway. These are displayed on each of the wards taking tracheostomy/laryngectomy patients. Staff caring for these patients must make themselves familiar with the flowcharts and the equipment that may be required in an airway emergency. Training is provided during the tracheostomy study days and in ILS/ALS. For further information on training please contact Helen Freedman or Deborah Dawson.
