Imaging Research Group

Who we are

The Imaging Research Group at St George’s Hospital (Imaging Research Group – St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), established in 2022, brings together radiologists, radiographers and physicists to deliver patient-focused, practice-changing research across the spectrum of diagnostic and interventional radiology. The group has grown rapidly and demonstrates a strong track record of research delivery and outputs, including:

  • Supporting research delivery for over 50 clinical trials (represented by a 10 fold increase in activity)
  • Over ten studies with chief and/or principle and associate-investigator roles in clinical studies (e.g., AMULET, METEOR, CALCIO, PAVE-2, PRESERVE and SERENADE)
  • Success in attracting competitive funding such as NIHR academic clinical fellowships, national, charity and internal grant awards
  • Impact extending nationally through leadership and committee contributions by members

We are particularly proud that the majority of our multi-disciplinary researchers are those not on dedicated academic tracks and represent a culture of research excellence and innovation. Much of the group comprises trainees, fellows and early-career clinical academics — including NIHR-funded fellows, specialty registrars acting as trial investigators, and radiographers undertaking research training — who are supported through mentorship, fellowship opportunities and structured research infrastructure. This infrastructure has been strengthened through dedicated appointments including a clinical research co-ordinator, clinical trials practitioner and research radiographer, enhancing capacity for study setup, governance and delivery alongside clinical service.
