Our philosophy of Care

We believe that all women are unique. By understanding this we can support your birth preferences and individualise care to suit your needs during childbirth.

Carmen Suite

Carmen Suite is a midwifery led birth centre within St George’s Hospital. Run by a team of midwives, our aim is to facilitate a normal birth experience in a home from home environment.  It is an ideal choice for many women and families who wish to avoid medical interventions and give birth naturally.
The Carmen Suite offers an alternative to a home birth whilst still providing a safe and comfortable experience.

Why is Carmen Suite right for me?
•    I want to give birth in the water
•    I want to remain active during labour
•    I want to labour in a calm and relaxed environment

Carmen Suite2The Carmen Suite offers a private and relaxing environment in which to labour and give birth. We have four birth rooms, including 2 with pools and en suite bathrooms. You will receive one to one care from a midwife who will support you during labour and help you to achieve a positive birth experience.

What pain relief options are available?
One to one care has been proven to help you cope better in labour. For this reason you will receive continuous care from a midwife, and we also encourage you to choose a birth partner who will support your birth choices.

•    Hydrotherapy (Pool)
•    Keeping mobile
•    Entonox (gas and air)

If you wish to know more about any of these options, we recommend discussing them with your midwife at your next antenatal appointment.

What happens if things don’t go to plan?
If we have any concerns about yourself or your baby in labour, or you decide you want an epidural, Carmen Suite is located close to the main Delivery Suite where the Obstetric Doctors, Midwives, Anaesthetists and Paediatricians are based.
