The Specialist Spasticity Management Service (SSMS) is a specialist service offering a comprehensive team approach for the management of spasticity. 

The objectives of the service are to provide the client, carer and referrer with a comprehensive assessment, advice and management of spasticity to minimise the long term effects and maximise the quality of life for the client.

What we offer 

The SSMS provides a comprehensive integrated service that offers access to the following: 

Spasticity clinics including: 

  • Botulinum Toxin injections,  
  • Management of oral spasticity medications 
  • Assessment for Sativex 
  • Assessment for Intrathecal Baclofen pump,  
  • Assessment for surgical management of spasticity  

We have close links with the other rehabilitation services 

  • Functional electrical stimulation clinic (FES) 
  • Gait and movement analysis laboratory 
  • Orthotic assessment and provision 
  • Upper limb splinting 
  • Specialist seating service 
  • Douglas Bader Gym 

Who the service is for: 

The spasticity service is appropriate for anybody presenting with problematic spasticity as a result of an UMN condition.  

There is an expectation that if appropriate some oral medications have been trialled by either a local neurologist or GP before referral and that physical management of spasticity by a therapist / therapy team has been tried. 

How to access the service: 

Referrals are accepted from GP’s, Consultants or health professionals
