Neurophysiology

The neurophysiology service uses innovative procedures to record and interpret electrical signals from the nervous system to diagnose and assess a range of nervous system disorders, including epilepsy, movement disorders, headaches and facial pain.
Neurophysiology investigations include:
- EEG (electroencephalography) – a recording of the electrical activity of the brain from the intact scalp
- Evoked potentials – these are potentials produced by the brain in response to specific stimuli, for example a flashing light or sounds, such as a click
- EMG (electromyography) and NCS (nerve conduction studies) – these assess function of the nerves and muscles within the body.
Services are provided to both adult and children outpatients and inpatients. Investigations are carried out in neurophysiology clinics, on the wards, intensive care and in operating theatres during surgery.

Referrals
Referrals are usually made by neuroscientists, neurosurgeons and neurologists from St George’s and Queen Mary’s Hospitals.
We also treat patients from hospitals from across south west London, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. Healthcare professionals should read the guidance on making urgent and non-urgent referrals.
