The department has an active research program, consisting of investigator-initiated academic studies, academic and commercial clinical trials (phase I-III, observational and therapeutic).

This is supported by all consultants as investigators and a regular stream of academic hepatology fellows enrolled for higher research degrees at St George’s University.  Research has focused on hepatitis B and C, alcohol-related liver diseases, metabolic-dysfunction  associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), drug-induced liver injury, cirrhosis, acute on chronic liver failure (ACLF) and portal hypertension.

We work closely with academic collaborators at City St. George’s University of London and beyond, the NIHR research delivery network and the pharmaceutical industry to provide clinical trial options for our patients so they may access novel treatment options or strategies. Most of our trials are carried out in the St George’s Clinical Research Facility. , which has achieved full accreditation by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).
