After gaining membership to the Royal College of Physicians (UK) he undertook postgraduate training at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where he earned an MSc in Medical Microbiology and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (1988).

Subsequently, Professor Lewis was appointed senior lecturer and honorary consultant physician at St George's, having graduated with an MD in 1994.
