Professor Holt is Professor of Vascular Surgery at St George’s University of London and a consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Professor Holt’s specialist interests are endovascular aneurysm repair and complex thoraco-abdominal aortic surgery. He is also experienced in peripheral arterial angioplasty for limb ischaemia, carotid endarterectomy for stroke and intervention for varicose veins.
Professional profile
Professor Holt qualified in 2003 from the University of London and trained at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, before moving to Charing Cross Hospital, then St George's, for vascular research and clinical practice. He was awarded his PhD in 2009 for his work on vascular surgery clinical outcomes and service configuration.
During his specialist training he undertook a period of training in General Surgery at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield before being awarded a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Academic Clinical Lectureship. This was superseded by a five-year NIHR Clinician Scientist Award in 2011. Professor Holt undertook a senior fellowship in Adelaide, Australia where he gained further experience in open aortic aneurysm repair and peripheral angioplasty for limb ischaemia.
Professor Holt became a consultant in 2013 at St George’s Hospital and Professor of Vascular Surgery in 2017. He has held a number of senior management roles including vascular surgery service lead and Clinical Director for Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Services. He is currently the Network Director for the South-West London Vascular Network in which he has oversight of the delivery, governance and development of vascular surgery across the broad geography encompassed by the vascular network of 1.5 million people.
Professor Holt leads a well-recognised academic vascular programme with a number of doctoral (PhD / MD) students and strong collaborations nationally and internationally. He is invited to speak regularly on his specialist areas on podiums worldwide. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles on all aspects of vascular disease.
Professor Holt has previously been a standing member on National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) committees and an invited expert for a number of NICE health technology appraisals. He advises the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for vascular surgery and has previously advised the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) on behalf of the Royal college of Surgeons of England.
Professor Holt is currently a Council member of the British Society of Endovascular Surgery.
