Clinical interests

My current practice encompasses all manner of ear-related conditions, auditory implantation and general ENT, with children’s clinics and care for a wide range of emergency ENT conditions.

Professional profile

I trained in Medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College in London, qualifying with a Distinction in Surgery in 1992. I have always had an interest in the science behind medical conditions and undertook a BSc degree at Imperial College, London in 1991 prior to medical finals.

Despite deciding on a career in ENT, I recognised the benefits of a good grounding in general surgical disciplines and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Clinical Surgery in General) before specialising in ENT. I became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Otolaryngology in 1997 then completed the final (intercollegiate) examination in otolaryngology in 2002.

My interest in the ear and hearing led to me to pursue a year of pure research during my training. With this and subsequent research I was awarded a Doctorate in Medicine from Leicester University in 2004. Having established otology as my main interest, I was awarded the very competitive Graham Fraser Fellowship to fund my training in cochlear implantation, Ménière’s disease and advanced otology under Professor WPR Gibson in Sydney in 2004.

I was appointed to my current post as Consultant ENT Surgeon at St George’s Hospital London immediately on returning from Sydney in 2004 – I started the Cochlear Implant Programme at St George’s in 2006.

I also visited The Boston Children’s Hospital as an observer and research fellow during my training and I am one of the few UK ENT surgeons to have been admitted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons
