St George’s hosted a visit from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Steven Barclay on Thursday 16 March.

The visit was led by Jacqueline Totterdell, Group Chief Executive Officer and Arlene Wellman, Group Chief Nursing Officer

The ministers visited Caroline Ward – specialist thoracic surgery ward – speaking with staff about their experiences working here.

Jo Hunter, Director of Nursing and Governance for MedCard Division, supported the ward visit and said:

This was a good opportunity to show the Prime Minister and Secretary of State around Caroline Ward and to introduce them to our brilliant hard working staff. We were glad of the chance to speak about the care we provide, and to be frank about the challenges we face, with elective recovery and improving patient flow through the emergency pathway.”

Speaking on the visit, Jacqueline Totterdell said:

“I’m immensely proud of everyone involved in the visit from the Prime Minister and Secretary of State. We were able to show them the exceptional care we provide and I know they welcomed the opportunity to speak with some of our staff about their roles and the day-to-day challenges they face. Thank you to everyone who was involved and to all our staff for their continued dedication and commitment to providing the best possible care.”

The visit coincided with an announcement of a new pay offer for NHS staff.
