Mr. Tom Macdonald
Clinical interests
Mr Macdonald’s clinical practice encompasses all aspects of orthodontic treatment, but he is especially interested in those patients requiring combined surgical orthodontic treatment for dentofacial deformity.
He also has significant experience in treating patients with hypodontia (congenitally missing teeth), impacted teeth (including impacted canines) and the treatment of patients following dental and facial trauma.
Professional profile
Mr Macdonald qualified as a dentist at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2006, with a BDS from Queen Mary University of London.
He subsequently undertook Vocational Dental Training in Nottingham. This was followed by 3 rotations as a Maxillofacial Surgical SHO at The Royal London and Homerton Hospitals in East London; prior to joining the Special Care and Community Dental Services in Barking Dagenham and Havering in 2008.
Since 2009 Tom has limited his practice to Orthodontics, undertaking Specialty Training at The Royal London Hospital Dental Institute and Southend University Hospital, gaining the Morth Exam in 2012. From 2012-2015 he undertook Higher Speciality Training with a focus on multidisciplinary treatment at The Royal London Hospital Dental Institute and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children gaining the Royal College Fellowship exam in 2014.
After a stint as a Locum Consultant at Queens Hospital in Romford from 2015-2016, Tom Was appointed as a Consultant in the Orthodontic Department at the Royal London Hospital Dental Institute where he worked closely with Consultant Colleagues in the Orthodontic Department delivering Specialist training to Registrars and Postgraduate Students and collaborating with Consultant Colleagues in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Surgery, Restorative Dentistry and Paediatric Dentistry in treating a diverse range of complex oro-facial problems. In addition to these clinical and academic endeavours, Tom was Clinical Lead of one of the busiest Orthodontic departments in the country for 6 years.
Having moved to South West London with his young family, Tom joined the team at St George’s in January 2025 and in thoroughly enjoying working with the wider team of consultants in the Maxillofacial and Dental unit, undertaking multidisciplinary treatment clinics and supervision of the Resident Orthodontic Trainees and postgraduate students.
