Dr Jamal Hayat
Clinical interests
Dr Hayat has been a Consultant Gastroenterologist since September 2014 and specialises in luminal gastroenterology. He performs diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy including pneumatic dilatation, botox injection, polypectomy and treatment of GI bleeding. He runs the GI physiology lab at St George’s having introduced high resolution manometry, ambulatory pH-impedance monitoring and wireless pH monitoring. Dr Hayat sees patients with general gastrointestinal disorders including anaemia, altered bowel habit, coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.
He runs a specialist oesophageal clinic and sees tertiary referrals for patients with oesophageal disorders including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, oesophageal motility disorders including achalasia, Barrett’s oesophagus and eosinophilic oesophagitis. He is part of the inpatient complex nutrition team receiving tertiary referrals from the region.
He sees outpatients at St George’s Hospital, Queen Mary’s Hospital Roehampton and the Nelson Hospital, and performs endoscopy at St George’s and Queen Mary’s.
Professional profile
Dr Hayat trained at Imperial College School of Medicine, before completing his basic medical training in the Oxford deanery. He then returned to London to complete his specialist gastroenterology training. During this period he undertook an MD research degree into the use of advanced diagnostic techniques in Upper GI disease. His work has been presented at the American Gastroenterology Association, United European Gastroenterology Association and the British Society of Gastroenterology. He is a specialist advisor for NICE on Gastro-Oesophageal reflux Disease and is a Principal Investigator in the UK for the first licensed treatment for Eosinophilc Oesophagitis and teaches on the undergraduate medical school programme at St George’s.
