Research delivery

Overview

St George’s Hospital has three radiology departments: general and interventional radiology, breast and neuroradiology.

Within the main department and interventional radiology all requests to undertake imaging for research will go through our internal radiology approval process which includes a radiologist and radiographer review and will assess availability of the type of scan, costings, and capacity.

CT, X-ray, ultrasound can usually be supported without issues, but final capacity can only be assessed once the full protocol and imaging requirements are known. For MRI, the capacity is more challenging and for scans which are outside of standard of care (require extra exploratory/nonstandard of care sequences, availability requires more discussion and therefore approval may take longer or not be granted more of than for other modalities. Research scans which involve additional sequences/views usually will be performed during working hours Monday to Friday.

For all modalities, research scans are scheduled alongside clinical scans and currently there are no reserved research slots on any of our scanners.

Research scans for neurological and breast conditions are usually handled by neuroradiology and breast radiology departments, separate from the main radiology department.

Approvals process

Any clinical trial where scans are part of the protocol is required to be reviewed and approved by radiology before the trial can begin.

If there are any queries for your research needs, or if you would like to discuss a clinical trial, please email radiology.research@stgeorges.nhs.uk.
