The St George’s infectious diseases and HIV neurology department provides comprehensive neurological services to patients with multiple diseases and very complex needs. Most of the patients treated by the department have neurological complications caused by another illness.
More than 40% of patients with HIV develop neurological complications. Some of these are caused directly by HIV, but a number of conditions are a side effect of treatment or other conditions caused by HIV.
At St George’s we work to alleviate common neurological side-effects for people living with infectious diseases such as HIV, including:
- Neuropathy
- Neurotoxicity
- HIV dementia
- Brain inflammation
As a regional specialist centre for infectious diseases, the team works closely with clinical teams from across St George’s and other hospitals in south west London and Surrey. We also work with GPs and community nursing teams to help patients manage their condition and symptoms outside of hospital.
