Project Night Owl

Project Night Owl is a pioneering initiative designed to support the wellbeing of our valuable night-working NHS colleagues at St George’s Hospital, funded by the national Workforce Wellbeing Programme from NHS Charities Together.  As part of this programme, we are pleased to announce a free 3-month trial of the Timeshifter Shift Work app for all St George’s Hospital employees & the recruitment of Night Owl Champions.

The Timeshifter Shift Work App

The Timeshifter Shift Work app provides personalised, science-based guidance to help reduce sleep disruption caused by shift work. It offers tailored advice on when to sleep and nap, optimal light exposure, and how to use caffeine effectively.

After entering your shifts and sleep preferences (including your natural sleep type/chronotype), you receive a daily personalised plan with simple prompts to help you stay on track.

You don’t need to work nights to benefit—the app also supports managing early/late shifts and transitions between work and rest days. The guidance is flexible; following it as closely as possible will give the greatest benefit.

You can sign up using a work or personal email address. No credit card is required. All data is stored confidentially in your personal account and is not shared with your employer. Timeshifter does not sell personal data or send spam.

To evaluate the trial, we will ask you to complete three very short surveys at around 1 month and 3 months. Responses are anonymised and combined into a group-level report only. Individual data will not be shared. Colleagues who find the app useful will be able to continue for a further 12 months.

To start your free trial, please click here.

Friends and family can access a free 30-day trial via the App Store, Google Play, or by clicking here.

Night Owl Champions – we are recruiting!

he Night Owl Wellbeing Champion volunteer role (NOC) has been introduced to ensure that staff who work night shifts — one of the most demanding and often overlooked groups in our organisation — have a dedicated, visible, and accessible source of peer wellbeing support.

Night Owl Champions (NOCs) act as the eyes, ears and heart of their teams after dark. You will promote a positive wellbeing culture, signpost colleagues to support, and help bridge the gap between night-shift staff and the wider health and wellbeing offer available across the organisation and help promote Project Night Owl as well as shape the Night Owl Champion Well-being Role.

To express an interest & receive further details of the role please complete this form –  Night Owl Champion Expression of Interest Form – Fill in form

  • Listen actively and compassionately to colleagues who may be struggling, without offering advice or counselling.
  • Signpost colleagues to the appropriate wellbeing services, staff networks, and support teams.
  • Encourage colleagues to take breaks, stay hydrated, and look after their physical and mental health.

Wellbeing initiatives & activities

  • Share anonymised feedback on themes and wellbeing needs from your team with the Health and Wellbeing team.
  • Maintain a brief activity log of initiatives delivered, conversations had, and signposting carried out.

Important boundaries

Please note that this is a peer support and signposting role. Night Owl Champions are not expected or trained to:

  • Provide counselling, therapy, or clinical advice
  • Manage disclosures of serious mental health crises independently — please escalate to appropriate services
  • Act as a substitute for management, HR, or occupational health

  • Protected time of approximately 2 hours per month to carry out your champion activities, considering that services needs will take priority (with Managers agreement).
  • Access to the Night Owl Small Grants fund for team wellbeing initiatives.
  • Connection to a wider network of Wellbeing Champions across the organisation.
  • Regular support and supervision from the Health and Wellbeing team.

Person specification

  • Line Managers agreement.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries.
