Fabrizio D’Abate, a Clinical Vascular Scientist at St George’s Hospital, Tooting, London received the 2015 Ann Donald award for Scientist of the Year on 14 November 2015 from the Society of Vascular Technology of Great Britain and Ireland (SVT).

The award is made to the scientist who has performed the best original research or been the most innovative in the promotion of vascular ultrasound during the year

Fabrizio was awarded the prize for work on iliac endofibrosis, an arterial  injury which often affects cyclists, marathon runners and triathlon athletes.

The Vascular team at St George’s have developed an effective diagnosis and treatment for the condition which can end the career of such athletes if not diagnosed early enough and treated effectively.

The Vascular Department at St George’s is currently carrying out a research project into the condition and is looking for referrals of athletes from sports doctors, physiotherapists and other hospitals.
