St George’s signs a clinical services contract with Gibraltar Health Authority
Dr John Cortes, Minister for Health, Environment, Energy and Climate Change today welcomed Miles Scott, Chief Executive of St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation to St Bernard’s Hospital, Gibraltar.
The purpose of the visit was to sign a new clinical services contract between the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA) and St George’s Hospital, and to showcase the new services this partnership will bring to the residents of Gibraltar, GHA consultants and local GPs.
Dr Cortes said “The GHA has today signed a contract with St George’s to supply us with a variety of visiting consultant services (in some instances with specialist nursing support) and to provide us with in-patient access to all of their high quality specialist services particularly neurology and neurosurgery, cardiology and cardiac surgery and endoscopy services in support of our colon cancer screening programme.
“Our decision to establish this link with St George’s has its genesis in our nursing services as St George’s, University of London and Kingston University has a joint faculty of Health and Social Care Science which trains our graduate nurses. But, more than this, St George’s is the UK’s largest single site teaching hospital and this gives us access to an unparalleled range of specialist and generalist services.
“The contract with St George’s focuses clearly on delivery and accountability, from both parties, and the future development of ever closer links. This is not to say that all of our work in the UK will or should transfer to St George’s and we will, for example, continue to use the Royal Marsden Hospital for cancer services and Great Ormond Street and the Evelina Children’s hospital for our paediatric referrals and there are other hospitals which will be used for certain services”.
Dr Cortes said “This is just the start. We expect to expand our use of all of the clinical services St George’s has to offer as we move forward”.
Miles Scott, Chief Executive of St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said “St George’s is the UK’s largest single site teaching hospital providing expert acute and community health services to over 4.5 million people across South West London, Surrey and beyond.
“Sharing our site with St George’s, University of London, one of the top 200 universities in the world, places us at the forefront of medical research with many staff holding joint trust and university positions.
“Our partnership with GHA will mean we can provide expertise and cutting-edge resources to medical professionals working in Gibraltar. We look forward to working with them.”
