The board of St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust, London, has appointed Miles Scott as its new chief executive. Miles, who has been chief executive of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since August 2005, is expected to take up his new post by January 2012.

Before joining Bradford Teaching Hospitals Miles was chief executive of Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust for four years. He started his NHS career on the General Management Training Scheme in 1988 after graduating from Cambridge University with a degree in History. His career in the NHS has encompassed acute, community and mental health services, the King’s Fund and Trent Regional Office. Miles is currently vice chairman of the Foundation Trust Network Board, chair of the West Yorkshire Comprehensive Local Research Network and a member of the GMC Undergraduate Board.

Speaking about his appointment Miles said: “I am delighted to be joining St George’s Healthcare at what is an exciting and challenging time for the trust. This is an organisation with a proud history and a strong track record of leading-edge healthcare delivery and development.

“In my new role I am determined to maintain and enhance the trust’s commitment to providing quality care to its patients. As a major trauma centre, hyper-acute stroke unit and centre of excellence for cancer, cardiac and women’s and children’s services the trust has a key role to play in the development of NHS services in southwest London. The recent integration with community services Wandsworth presents some real opportunities for developing new services for patients that can be delivered away from hospital and closer to home.

“The long-term future of St George’s Healthcare is dependent on it becoming a foundation trust and I look forward to working with the board and staff to achieve this. It is also important for the trust to build strong alliances with local NHS organisations and to develop its partnership with St George’s, University of London.”

Welcoming the appointment on behalf of the trust board Naaz Coker, chair, said: “Miles has a wealth of NHS experience and his knowledge and understanding of what it takes to operate a successful foundation trust will be crucial in helping us to achieve our long-term vision and goals. We warmly welcome him to the St George’s Healthcare team.”
