Elisabeth Thurlow is the first professional archivist at St George’s, University of London, and has been tasked with organising and developing the archive to enable it to be used as an academic resource for research and to engage people with our shared history, in a post supported by the St George’s Hospital Charity.

Between 1996 and 2007 the St George’s Hospital Group deposited the majority of its historic hospital records, consisting mainly of patient and staff registers, at the London Metropolitan Archives. The records which remain at the University relate to both the history of the Hospital and the Medical School. The records provide a rich source for research, not only about the history of the Hospital and Medical School, but also about the wider transformation in the teaching and practice of medicine since the 18th century.

The historical collections include archives, historic books and artefacts, which include 19th century surgical instruments. The aim of the St George’s Archive Project is to preserve these and make them accessible. We will keep you updated about our future plans to celebrate the history of St George’s.
