Congratulations to Professor Heather Jarman, Consultant Nurse for Emergency Care at St George’s, on winning an RCNi Nurse Award.

Our Emergency Department’s Research Nursing Team nominated Professor Jarman in the Emergency Nursing Award category.

Professor Jarman secured funding and created from scratch a flourishing research unit in the emergency department at St George’s Hospital in London.

Jacqueline Totterdell, Chief Executive, said: “Heather is a fantastic leader, and one of many role models within the organisation. The fact that our nurses, therapists and other healthcare professionals are so actively involved in research is brilliant, and makes me really proud.

“Well done Heather – a great achievement.”

The unit has expanded to a team of four nursing whole time equivalents and a research fellow, providing cover from 8am to 10pm every day. Professor Jarman trains and mentors novice researchers, and supports consultants and nurses to enable them to become principal investigators.

Nurses have the opportunity to become active in research, recruiting patients and doing follow-ups. The unit’s growing reputation has resulted in approaches from international research teams to join studies.

The RCNi Nurse Awards identify and celebrate nurses who, every day, go above and beyond to save lives, provide outstanding care for patients and transform nursing practice for the better.
