Nye Bevan Unit opened its doors for the first time on 15 August 2016, and to mark its first birthday, staff arranged a party to celebrate.

The unit, based in St James’ Wing at St George’s, is a purpose-built emergency surgical assessment unit, with a minor procedures room and two emergency clinics as well. Since October 2016, patients’ length of stay on Nye Bevan has been consistently below ten hours, and at least half of all patients go directly home from the unit.

Furthermore, patient feedback has been excellent, with the Friends and Family Test results for ‘Would you recommend this service?’ regularly hitting 98%-100%.

One patient wrote: “From the time I came in I have been looked after very well by every single member of staff. I have no friends or family with me here but they looked after me like a family.”

Daniel Weegmann, Matron in Surgery, told us: “I am incredibly proud to have been part of the planning, opening and development of Nye Bevan Unit. I’ve had the pleasure of working with many people to make this project a reality and a success, and most importantly have loved every minute working with the fantastic team that keep Nye Bevan Unit running every hour of the day, every day of the year.

“We’re now one year old and have achieved so much already and I look forward to another year!”

Well done to staff for making the first year such a success.
