St George’s has signed up once again to support the internationally renowned awareness campaign – Nutrition and Hydration Week – across the trust.

We’ve got a variety of activities and events taking place to boost awareness to our patients, visitors and staff throughout the week (14th – 20th March).

We’ll kick the week off by promoting breakfast time with our Big Breakfast event and raising awareness of protected mealtimes.

Patients, visitors and staff alike are invited to our ‘Come Dine With Me’ events at Queen Mary’s Hospital on Tuesday (15th March) and St George’s Hospital on Wednesday (16th March).

Wednesday will concentrate on celebrating our staff in our annual Celebrating Food and Drink Excellence and Care in Delivery Awards ceremony with awards titled: Hostess of the year, Dietitian of the Year, Link Nurse of the Year, Volunteer of the Year as well as special commendations.

We hope to beat the Guinness World Records with our Global Tea Party for the most people celebrating an afternoon tea in a hospital setting on Thursday (17th March).

Staff will also be engaging with patients about the importance of hydration, offer nutritional advice and raise awareness of dementia throughout the week via awareness stands in the main entrances of St George’s and Queen Mary’s Hospitals. Other activities include celebrating food and drink within our restaurants including ‘Food for You’ on Thursday and ‘Fishy Friday’ and ‘Fruity Friday’ to end the week. The paediatric wards will also get involved with cake decorating.

‘We hope to reinforce and focus energy, activity and engagement on nutrition and hydration as an important part of quality care, experience and safety improvement in health and social care settings’ said Jenni Doman, facilities general manager at St George’s.

Originally a collaboration between the Hospital Caterers Association, National Association of Care Catering and Patient Safety Domain NHS England, Nutrition and Hydration Week has now become a global event with a life of its own.
