The RTS award-winning – and 2019 BAFTA nominated – documentary series is back with its 18th series on Channel 4.

The hospital has one of the busiest A&E departments in Britain – under more pressure than ever. It’s a place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every day.

This episode – You before me – explores selflessness and parental sacrifice as two families come to terms with life-changing events.

8 year old Junior is rushed to resus with an open leg fracture and suspected internal bleeding after being hit by a car. His mum, step-dad, brothers and sisters join him at his bedside as doctors decide to send him for urgent CT scans. As doctors examine the severity of his injuries, we hear from his mum Bekki about how Junior learnt to cope with extraordinary set backs and how she worries about his future because of health problems of her own.

46 year old Anthony arrives unexpectedly in A&E after suffering chest pains during a day out at the races. As doctors attempt to get to the bottom of what’s causing his dangerously high heart rate, we hear from his wife about how the early loss of his father heightened Anthony’s own awareness of his mortality.
