New episode of 24 Hours in A&E: The Cards You’re Dealt…
The RTS award-winning documentary series returns for a seventeenth series following patients treated in the same 24-hour period at St George’s.
The hospital has one of the busiest A&E departments in Britain – under more pressure than ever. It’s a place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every day.
This episode – The Cards You’re Dealt – focuses on patients who have shown extraordinary fortitude when life has challenged them with extraordinary circumstances.
Maureen, 66, is rushed to St George’s struggling to breathe through her tracheostomy. Nurse Christine battles to clear her airway whilst her husband Preston waits in the relatives’ room. As further investigations are carried out, Preston joins Maureen and we learn how their world was turned upside down when Maureen was diagnosed with the neurological condition Multiple System Atrophy.
10-year-old Ryan is brought into resus having fallen at school and suffered internal bleeding, doctors quickly establish he requires an emergency blood transfusion. Following a CT scan we learn he has badly damaged his spleen and requires a further blood transfusion. As his parents look on we hear the story of how theirs and Ryan’s lives were turned upside down by a horrific diagnosis when he was a baby.
Meanwhile 4-year-old Milly has been brought into paediatric A&E after falling on her face and bruising it.
