New episode of 24 Hours in A&E: Sacrifice
Filmed in the autumn of 2020, the RTS award-winning documentary series returns to St George’s for the twenty fourth series following patients all treated in the emergency department. The hospital has one of the busiest A&E departments in Britain – a place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every day.
In a year of so much loss due to the Coronavirus pandemic, this episode reflects on the sacrifices we make for the people we love.
Dr Richard, the on-call stroke doctor is having a busy shift in the resus department, and shares an emotional account of his work on the frontline during the first wave of the pandemic.
72-year-old John is rushed to St George’s with a suspected stroke after being found slumped in the bathroom by his wife Jean. While Dr Richard and the stroke team work quickly to find the right treatment for John, Jean waits anxiously at home. Jean shares tales of how their lives used to be until one day ten years earlier when everything changed.
Meanwhile, 19-year old Daniel has come off his motorbike and been brought into resus as mum Diana hurries to the hospital to be by his side. While doctors examine his injuries, Diana shares a heartbreaking story of leaving her children in Colombia in search of a better life for them abroad.
On shift in the minor injuries department is Emergency Practitioner Rachel who treats 21-year old builder, William, after he sustained an ankle injury in a game of basketball.
