The new facility – opening in the Spring – will support faster treatment for local patients waiting for day-surgery as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Four mobile day-surgery theatres will open on the Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton site in Spring 2021. The theatres are being set up as a direct result of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has led to longer waiting times for patients waiting for routine operations and procedures across south west London.

The mobile theatres and dedicated recovery areas are standalone, and will be located on a section of the hospital’s existing car park. These will be staffed and run by the NHS in south west London, and will enable surgical teams to carry out many extra operations for a range of routine, day-case procedures.

Patients will benefit from the creation of this dedicated, standalone day-surgery service, that will be separate from the other main hospital sites in south west London, ensuring a much reduced risk of cancellations. All pre- and post-operative care will still be provided at a patient’s usual local hospital.

All other patient services on the Queen Mary’s Hospital site will continue as usual.  The new theatres will be Covid-secure and comply with the very latest infection prevention and control standards. Preparatory works to install the operating theatres will begin shortly, with the modular units installed in early March, and operational in the Spring.

The facility is not yet operational. Further communications – including information for patients – will be shared in due course.
