Mr Ken Anson
Clinical interests
Ken Anson is a Consultant Urological Surgeon and Reader in Urology at St. George's Hospital, London. He is the clinical lead for the Endourology Unit and runs the South West London Urinary Stone Network. He is a high volume surgeon performing large numbers of ureteric or renal endoscopic procedures per year. Ken is a busy full time NHS Consultant and, in addition, is a Trustee and Treasurer of the British Association of Urological Surgeons(BAUS). He has previously served as the Chairman and Secretary of the BAUS Section of Endourology and as Chairman of the Division of Surgery, Anaesthetics, Theatres, Cancer and Neurosciences at St George’s from 2009-2012. He is an examiner for the The Royal College of Surgeon's Intercollegiate Board for FRCS Urol and serves on the Intercollegiate College Examination Board of Urology. He also examines for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s external Hong Kong final fellowship examination.
Over the past 5-10 years Ken’s academic career has focussed on helping to develop a pipeline of endourological research that have progressed from pilot studies to large NIHR funded multicentre clinical trials across the UK. This work has mostly been conducted through the BAUS Section of Endourology and has resulted in the first trial SUSPEND being published in the Lancet and the TISSU trial is still recruiting and the PURE study is ready to be launched early next year. St George’s is a recruiting centre for all of these trials and Ken is a grant holder and principle investigator. He has previously been involved in a number of other clinical studies at St George’s Hospital and has published widely on catheter related urinary tract infections, novel imaging techniques of the pelvicalyceal system and the use of IT for monitoring implantable medical devices.
Ken is a keen teacher and surgical trainer and is a regular faculty member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons skills courses in rigid and flexible upper tract endoscopy. He spends his spare time with his family and he likes to flyfish for salmon, walk his flat-coated retriever, sail, ski and sleep.
