Urgent and emergency care

We would like to reassure you that our Emergency Department (ED) at St George’s Hospital remains open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for anyone requiring emergency care.

If you require any form of urgent care, please don’t hesitate to access the treatment you need – along with ED, our specialist neuro and cardiac services are able to safely care for you if you suspect you’ve had a stroke or heart attack.

Our staff are able to safely care for anyone that requires treatment, and a number of steps have been taken to reduce the risk of infection. We are here for you, so please don’t delay if you are in urgent need of treatment.

By delaying getting the care that you need, it is possible that you are risking your long-term health.

Dr Rhys Benyon, Consultant in Emergency Care, said: “We want you to know that we’re here for you. If you’re critically ill or you have a severe injury then please do come to us. We’re ready to treat you.”

In a medical emergency, please call 999. If you need urgent medical advice, which is not life-threatening, contact NHS 111 or speak to your GP.

As of Monday 28 November 2022, patients attending the emergency department can now be accompanied by one visitor.

We politely ask that visitors remain mindful and respect that priority for seating should be given to patients.

There may be times where the waiting room becomes overcrowded and reaches maximum capacity therefore, we may request that visitors wait outside the department. Please refer to information posters in waiting room of available areas to wait.

Whilst there have been lots of changes to guidance around mask wearing. The Emergency Department kindly requests that all visitors wear a face mask, keep a safe distance, and clean their hands with gel whilst in the department.
