The Neurology department specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system – including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles.

The Neurology department at St George’s is part of the Atkinson Morley Regional Neurosciences Centre, based in the Atkinson Morley Wing. There is also a neurology department based at Queen Mary’s hospital. We are the regional tertiary centre for specialist inpatient and outpatient neurosciences services for a population of 3 million people across South-West London, Surrey and Sussex. The department works closely with St George’s University of London in the delivery of specialist teaching, education and research.

Neurology used to be based at the old Atkinson Morley’s Hospital in Wimbledon, where the world’s first CT scanner was developed by Sir Godfrey Hounsfield and James Ambrose. It was the regional neuroscience centre for south-west London and a large part of Surrey and Sussex. In 2003, the unit closed and moved to the new, purpose-built, Atkinson Morley Wing at St George’s, sharing accommodation with the regional cardiothoracic unit.

The department consists of a large team of over thirty consultant staff, including visiting consultants based primarily at other hospitals who provide specialist clinics at St George’s. As well as General Neurology clinics, a wide range of specialist outpatient clinics are provided. There are also ten Clinical Nurse Specialists who provide a range of outpatient clinics and domiciliary care.

The department benefits from having a 30 bed regional Neurology Ward (Kent Ward) for the investigation and treatment of inpatients with complex neurological conditions. The ward also houses the inpatient video-telemetry service and acute rehabilitation beds for patients with major traumatic brain injury. There is also a Neuroscience Day Unit available for patients requiring day case procedures, complex investigations, infusions, or assessment.

The department works closely with the other services within Neurosciences (Neurophysiology, Neuroradiology, Neuropsychology, Neuropsychiatry, Neurosurgery, Neuropathology, Neurorehabilitation and Chronic Pain) to deliver high quality, seamless care to all patients.
