Clinical interests
Mr Takhar is a consultant ear, nose and throat and head and neck surgeon based at St George’s, Epsom and St Helier Hospitals. His main clinical interest is in the diagnosis and treatment of cancerous and benign conditions of the head and neck.
He specialises in surgical procedures on head and neck tumours including cancers of the throat, voice box, sinuses, thyroid, and salivary glands. He is trained in robotic head and neck surgery for the diagnosis and treatment of throat (tonsil and tongue base) cancers; and has a specific interest in complex / rare tumours, and recurrent cancers.
Professional profile
Mr Takhar was appointed as a consultant at St George’s in 2022. He graduated from the University of Leicester with Honours and undertook his surgical training in London teaching hospitals including St George’s, Guy’s & St Thomas’ and the Royal National Throat, Nose & Ear Hospital. During training he was awarded a place on the prestigious National Medical Director’s clinical fellowship scheme and spent time working on quality improvement in healthcare, including earlier and faster diagnosis of cancer, and the getting it right first-time programme.
After completing training, Mr Takhar undertook a nationally appointed interface fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and the Christie where he gained intensive training in surgery for the full spectrum of head, neck, and thyroid malignancies. Following this, he undertook a second head and neck fellowship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia, where he was fully trained in trans-oral robotic surgery, and subsequently worked as a locum consultant, prior to starting at St George’s.
Mr Takhar has numerous peer-reviewed publications and has contributed to national guidelines and book chapters on topics including unknown primary cancers, robotic surgery, paragangliomas, and parapharyngeal space tumours. He has a passion for delivering the best possible care and treatments for patients and supports the recruitment of patients to national surgical trials.
