British Journal of Midwifery Award nomination for Getting Over the Bump
Congratulations to the Getting Over the Bump team on their nomination in the ‘Innovation in Practice’ category at the British Journal of Midwifery (BJM) Practice Awards.
The Getting Over the Bump service at St George’s Hospital was established in 2016 and is believed to be the only service of its kind in the country.
Through antenatal clinics, the service assesses the needs of pregnant women with pre-existing sensory or physical impairments (for instance, cerebal palsy or a hearing impariment), helping mums-to-be remain independent during their pregnancy.
Trudy Williams, Maternal Medicine Midwife, had the idea to set up the service having seen first-hand how these pre-existing conditions can lead to complications during and after pregnancy.
Since the service launched, it’s received positive feedback from their patients, and after a recent presentation at a BJM study day, the service was put forward for their awards.
Elizabeth Lyle, Specialised Occupational Therapist, told eG: “We first heard about the nomination on Monday and we were all excited and delighted with the news. It’s a great opportunity to raise the profile of our work and we’re looking forward to heading up to Leeds to represent St George’s at the ceremony next month.”

The awards take place on Wednesday 13 February.
