The RTS award-winning documentary series returns for a twelfth series following patients treated in the same 24 hour period at St George’s. This episode explores ‘special relationships’.

36-year-old Lee is rushed to St George’s after being involved in a high-speed road traffic collision. Staff are concerned about what to expect as Lee is brought into resus, “You have to prepare for massive blood loss… It can be life threatening” comments Nurse Celine as they wait for Lee to be brought in.

As Lee is examined by doctors, his wife Emily reflects on her fears as she travels to the hospital and reveals that Lee lost his best friend months earlier in a similar collision, “It can’t happen again, two best friends can’t go in the same way.”

As Lee’s CT scans reveal a potentially life threatening injury to his spleen, Emily talks about wanting to protect him “You want to take the pain away from him, but you just can’t.”

Meanwhile 34-year-old Jeroen is also in resus having been knocked off his bike on the way to work. The accident is caught on his own Go Pro camera mounted on his helmet.  Doctors are concerned about his injuries and Nurse Celine says, “When patients have got tingling and numbness you are really concerned, it can indicate spinal cord injuries resulting in paralysis.”

Jeroen’s wife Joanna has been told about the accident and rushes to St George’s to be by his bedside, “I think I went into survival mode…to be next to Jeroen.” As Jeroen is taken for emergency CT scans, Joanna reflects on how they both wanted children together and underwent IVF. Eventually she had twins but the biggest surprise was when she conceived a baby boy naturally afterwards.

21 year-old Chris has come to St George’s after dislocating his finger scoring the winning point in a basketball match. He’s also a keen Vlogger – where he posts videos of his day-to-day life on social media. He thinks the trip to A&E is the perfect subject for one of his online vlogs. As Chris waits for the nurse to examine his X-Rays, he talks about the sacrifices his family made to give him the best life possible.
