Outpatient Physiotherapy – Queen Mary’s

The outpatient physiotherapy service is one of the largest physiotherapy providers in Roehampton, Putney and south west London offering extensive diagnostic and treatment facilities.
The service treats a wide variety of musculoskeletal (muscles, bones & joints, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and soft tissues), women’s health and long-term conditions, such as diabetes and arthritis. The service is open to patients over the age of 16, patients under 16 will be seen by a paediatric physiotherapist.
The service delivers high quality care and is well know to consultants and GPs through south west London. Results of recent patient satisfaction surveys show:
- 97% of patients rated treatment as excellent and good
- 98% of patients would recommend the service
- 98% of patients felt involved in decisions about their care and treatment
The service can help with many muscle, nerve and joint problem, including:
- Neck and back pain, including referred paint like sciatica
- Rheumatoid and osteoarthritis
- Pre and post surgery rehabilitation
- Fracture rehabilitation
- Soft tissue and sports injuries
- Headaches arising from the neck
- Ligament sprains
- Muscle strains
- Ergonomic advice
- Women’s health muscoskeletal complaints relating to pregnancy and urology / gynaecology conditions
There are many treatments and classes available to patients.
The department will be in contact as soon as your referral is received. Patients with acute conditions are offered an appointment within 24 hours of the department receiving the patient’s referral.
A recent patient survey showed that 98% of patient were more than satisfied or satisfied with their wait for an initial appointment.
At your first appointment the physiotherapist will ask you questions about your symptoms and any relevant medical history. A physical examination will then be carried out so the therapist can work with you to set treatment goals and a rehabilitation plan. Your first appointment may take up to 60 minutes, subsequent follow-up appointments may take up to 30 minutes.
You rehabilitation plan will give you an idea of the number and frequency of treatments you are likely to need and outline what you will need to do at home and/or work to help your progress. The exercises that your physiotherapist ask you to do at home are a vital part of your treatment.
Throughout your course of treatment your physiotherapist will give you advice on how you can help manage your symptoms both in the short-term (in between treatment sessions) as well as the long-term, when you have completed your treatment.
You can help your condition by identifying what activities may be contributing to your condition, for example many of the root causes of spinal pain are lifestyle related, such as long periods of sitting in front of a computer at work and home. Try to change these activities by breaking long periods of sitting down by moving around as often as you can.
Holistic approach to patient care
The team takes a holistic approach to care, looking at the body as a whole. In many cases, symptoms like pain and stiffness are caused by many factors working together. For example, persistent back pain may be triggered by a combination of poor posture, being overweight, repetitive work-related activities and incorrect technique when playing sport.
This approach to care aims to treat the symptoms, but also address the factors that contribute to the cause, helping to reduce the risk of the problem happening again.
The team work with you to form an individually tailored rehabilitation programme, helping you reach your goal. This involves:
- Identifying the factors that led to your condition and how avoid symptoms in the future
- Providing education and treatment, including exercise to improve our functional ability
- Encouragement of healthy lifestyle changes and self management of your condition
As part of your treatment your physiotherapist may feel you would benefit from seeing another health professional, such as a dietician for healthy eating advice or a podiatrist for a foot biomechanical assessment. The physiotherapist will refer you directly to another NHS service, this integrated approach ensures that you receive the very best care.
We have strong links with the following teams:
- Diabetes nurses
- Neurological rehabilitation specialists for Parkinson’s Disease, Stroke and MS
- Senior health physiotherapists
If your condition does not response to physiotherapy or cannot be helped by treatment then you may be referred to an advanced physiotherapy practitioner in the muscuoskeletal clinical assessment service.
This service consists of highly specialist physiotherapists with extensive experience. They can arrange investigations such as x-rays, blood tests, MRI scans and ultrasound, as well as coordinate an onward referral to a specialist team for pain management or surgery.
Our service can make onward referrals to Hydrotherapy, Pain Clinic, Chronic pain management team, Orthopaedics, Neurology (At SGH) – to further promote our extended services.
How to get an appointment
The service can be accessed via referral from your GP and self-referral (currently available from GPs in Putney). Patients interested in self-referral should discuss with their GP surgery if this service is available.
Self-referral services are not available to patients with neck and / or back pain, patients with these symptoms will need to see your GP to be referred to the service. This is due to the introduction of new government regulations under the Any Qualified Provider scheme.
